Routing : from game to reality (Continue)

Friday 13 November will not be a lucky day for the Vendée Globe skippers 2020 (¹). They will have to negotiate the meeting with the tropical storm "Theta" which crosses their course with average winds which can reach the 40 knots and strong gusts. Especially the sea will be to fear because, strongly crossed when passing the low pressure center, the waves may exceed the 6 meters and surge chaotically. Read more …

Android Marine embarks for the Vendée Globe 2020

eh yes, everything happens ! In my entire IT-nautical career I had never played any game on a computer, not even the historic Windows card game that cost businesses thousands of idle office hours… but you should never say : never !

Or donc, here I am registered at Virtual Regatta, one among the more than 340.000 players registered at this time, ready to start the Vendée Globe tomorrow at 1:02 p.m.. Like any beginner, I watched some videos to quickly understand this game, who, are all, seems relatively simple for a confirmed sailor. But from there to playing with the big boys, there are still several oceans to cross !

SailGrib embarks for the Vendée Globe 2020

Not, This is not a joke ! SailGrib embark with Weather4D on the Vendée Globe 2020 with Virtual Regatta. The two friends Henri and Olivier have jointly developed a routing module directly integrated into the game.

Philippe Guigné, the creator of the online game Virtual Regatta, explains in an interview with Sails & Boat :

«… we want the virtual Vendée Globe to be aimed at the general public and it is therefore logical that we help neophytes by providing new tools. So, for this edition we are offering a routing assistance system, directly integrated into the game, in partnership with SailGrib and Weather4D. These routings will first be simplified so that everyone can use them. In a second time, we will set up more elaborate routings that will allow us to determine long-term strategies…"

A new evolution for the two leaders in navigation applications, weather and routing on mobile devices, which should allow them to popularize their applications to a large audience, and perhaps spark vocations among the large number of players who have never set foot on water.

ECMWF weather data soon open to the public [2part]

Source : The Parliament Mag by Umberto Modigliani, deputy director of forecasts of ECMWF, responsible, with the department director, continuous production of forecasts and user relations.

Beginning of October, the European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (CEPMMT) will take a big step forward by making hundreds of its forecast maps freely available to all.
These changes are part of a large European initiative to make public sector data free and open, to encourage innovation and support a thriving data-driven digital economy.

Until now, full access to these forecast charts was restricted to national meteorological and hydrological services of ECMWF Member States and Cooperating States, to members of the World Meteorological Organization and to business customers. Access was subject to a series of custom licenses and high fees. Read more …

ECMWF weather data soon open to the public [11st part]

Created in 1975 at the initiative of members of the European Union, the European Center for Medium-Term Meteorological Forecasting is an independent intergovernmental organization with, until this day, is located in Reading, England. ECMWF is funded by 22 member states and 12 associated states. It employs nearly 350 people, and its supercomputer equipment is one of the largest in Europe. For about fifteen years, ECMWF forecasts tend to be among the most accurate in the world, according to verification data from the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). ECMWF is currently headed by French meteorologist Florence Rabier, who worked at the local Meteorological Office of Météo-France.

But, since the advent of Brexit, the situation has changed. UK no longer part of the EU, CEPMMET must move to a European country, and this may have, for weather data users, consequences… positives. Read more …

Marine electronics manufacturers and the Tablet phenomenon

A few days before the opening of Paris Nautic where, I would remind, I will be present on the stand iTabNav (Hall 2.1 – D31), an overview is required. And precisely, in our immediate horizon we will have, like every year, the proximity of their representatives and marine electronics manufacturers.

In the previous edition of the boat show, I could see the nervousness - not to say hostility - manufacturers respect the phenomenon Crescent of tablets and other smartphones on the market of navigation. (A) promote these devices and their applications, I do probably not have only friends in this environment. However, the strong pressure of the purchasers of boats, and so navigation electronics, a forced such manufacturers to incorporate a minimum of interactivity between their own equipment and mobile devices now owned by a majority of browsers.

What prompts me to do a quick update on the State of the supplied applications and the progress of the proposed functions.
