The GRIB race will take place

It’s an interesting match-racing game that’s emerging on Android in the field of marine weather applications.. Indeed, since Olivier Bouyssou ported his software to Android Weather4D, the friendly Henri Laurent, who I had the pleasure of meeting at the Nautic, has worked hard to bring new features and improvements to its application SailGrib/WR. In this “digital regatta” he thus marks a formidable opponent, although it has not yet carried the advanced functions of the iOS version to Android. This tactic, which aims to maintain a lead by placing yourself resolutely in front of your opponent, is often used by the best sailors..

Due to the boat show and a busy training schedule, I hadn't yet had time to look into the last one version 1.2.0 published in November, just before the Boat Show. It brings substantial new features, some of which visibly inherited from his opponent :

• Download GRIB of your choice : direct from the Great Circle server or by email from Saildocs.

Subscriptions

The use of the models provided by Great Circle requires a subscription, free to directly download the standard models, paying for everyone else.

The Great Circle subscription grid

The first “Cruising Silver” paid subscription concerns use while cruising. It is also the cheapest. Prices range from 4 periods : 1, 3, 6 or 12 month. Free subscription only provides access to download GFS and GEM global files (Canada).

Periodic subscriptions

These prices are quite high, but it is true that users often only need it for a limited summer period. Since we are witnessing a race underway, these prices must be compared to the 10 annual € requested by Weather4D for all forecast models, including the recently added fine mesh models. This being said, SailGrib WR provides quality routing that will take advantage of these new fine-mesh wind and current files. What remains is the appreciation of interfaces which only comes down to very personal tastes..
